Last week our developers visited PyCon UK in Cardiff, Dan, John and James had a great time (and that’s without mentioning Tiny Rebel). Here is each of their favorite talks:

This is a bit of a twofer for me. Last year Ben gave a talk on how the BBC use python and AWS for rapid prototyping https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIy964OVRKw, this year they were back to present how they have implemented this process when building ‘live highlights’ on BBC iPlayer. Seeing how they have used ephemeral infrastructure to keep costs low and take away some of the maintenance headache so that developers can keep their eyes on rapid development, to adapt to users needs as more services were onboarded to the system, and how successful this approach has been was certainly eye opening.

As someone who regularly liaises with clients it’s not uncommon to hit issues around domain terminology, especially if it’s a domain I’m unfamiliar with. After listening to the talk I am definitely going to try some of the modeling techniques mentioned. I especially liked the seek early review tip as that's something I can relate to, both the reviewer and the reviewee.

Not a Python one for me but as Postgres is our db of choice at Wildfish it was interesting to get an explanation on some of the features and settings we can change to creep out more performance. I’ve used Performance insights in AWS and Azure and have taken a little bit for granted the insights and tuning recommendations the cloud providers offer.
All in all PyCon UK 2023 was a great conference as it always has been when Wildfish have been in attendance, all the talks from the assembly room are available on the PyCon UK youtube page with a full playlists for each day. We look forward to being there next year.
